Driveway Paving · Shoreline
Shoreline driveways are good value for the same reason everything else here is: there is room to work. These post-war lots generally have space to bring plant in, stage material and excavate properly, which keeps the labour component well below a comparable Seattle city job. The ground is the same glacial till as north Seattle, so the base specification is well understood — and the local wrinkle is the same one that affects every flat north-end lot, which is that level ground on till gives a driveway base nowhere to drain to. The exceptions are the ravine-edge and Richmond Beach bluff properties, where runoff routing becomes a stability question.

What we get called about
Shoreline is what north Seattle would be with bigger lots — the same glacial till, the same flat platforms, the same drainage consequences, but with real space to work in and generally straightforward access. Two local specifics are worth knowing. Innis Arden has covenants including view protection, which constrains planting height and tree work in a way the rest of the city does not. And the western edge above Richmond Beach is bluff ground, where slope stability and drainage are design factors rather than formalities.
Worth knowing in Shoreline
On a flat Shoreline drive, put the fall in deliberately and route it into planting rather than onto the street. A wide drive generates a real volume of runoff, and a planted strip or a bed at the low edge absorbs it far more gracefully than a channel at the kerb.
The method
The sequence does not change between neighbourhoods — what changes is the ground it is applied to. Full detail on the driveway paving service page.
A drive that falls toward the house needs a drainage answer designed in, not added later. On a sloped Seattle lot that is the majority of them.
Substantially deeper than a patio. Undersized excavation is the single most common reason a driveway fails, and it is invisible once the surface is on.
Crushed rock, compacted layer by layer, with geotextile separation where the subgrade is soft. This is the layer carrying the car.
Pavers bedded, cut and edge-restrained; concrete formed, reinforced, poured and jointed; asphalt laid and rolled to compaction while hot.
Street apron, garage threshold and the joints against any path or step, which are the points that show wear first and the points a rushed job leaves rough.
What it costs in Shoreline
Shoreline driveways sit at the efficient end of $12 to $32 per square foot for the labour, because access is good and excavated material and imported base can both be handled by machine. Total cost tracks area, which on these lots is usually generous. Bluff-adjacent work carries additional consideration on where the runoff goes.

Local questions
General questions about this service are on the service page. These are the ones that only come up here.
Access, and on a driveway it makes a bigger difference than on any other job. A vehicle-rated base means excavating and importing several tons of material, and on a Seattle city lot with no room to work that is slow, manual and expensive. On a Shoreline lot with space for an excavator and a delivery truck, the same specification goes in with a fraction of the crew hours. It is the same materials and the same build-up — the difference is entirely in how it gets there and how the spoil leaves.
Yes, and on till it needs it more than a sloped one. Level ground gives surface water nowhere to run and gives the base beneath no gravity drainage, so both the surface and the build-up stay wet through the winter. A base that spends months saturated loses density under repeated vehicle loading, which is what produces rutting along the wheel lines. A cross-fall you cannot feel driving over it, directing water into planting or a drainage run with a real outfall, is what keeps a flat drive intact.
That the runoff becomes a stability consideration rather than a drainage detail. A driveway is a large impermeable surface, so rainfall that previously soaked in across that area now leaves as concentrated flow. On bluff-adjacent ground, directing that toward a slope edge is the mechanism that causes problems over successive wet seasons. The runoff needs a designed destination away from the sensitive ground, and the parcel is worth checking for critical area designations before the work is specified rather than after.
Often not, and it is worth saying so. Edge cracking on an older concrete drive is frequently just the unsupported perimeter breaking down where there was never an edge restraint, while the main field remains sound. That can be cut back and reformed, or edged properly, for a fraction of the cost of replacement. What does justify replacement is failure in the field itself — sections at different heights, rocking under load, or ruts along the wheel lines, all of which say the base has gone. We will tell you which you have before quoting.
