Ballard driveway work is small, tight and mostly about making a constrained space genuinely usable. Many of the older streets here have no off-street parking at all, so a common project is creating a parking pad or a single-width drive where there was none — which is as much a question of what the frontage will physically allow as of how to surface it. Where a drive does exist it is usually narrow, often original to a house built for narrower cars, and frequently cracked at the edges where nothing was ever restraining it. The one genuine advantage here is the ground: much of Ballard sits on outwash that drains far better than the city's till.

The one real constraint is access: the older streets have narrow side returns and no off-street parking, so material handling shapes the schedule.
Worth knowing in Ballard
Check what the city allows at the kerb before you plan a new driveway. Creating a crossing where none exists is a separate approval from the paving itself, and it is the step that decides whether the project is possible at all — worth establishing first rather than after a design.

A drive that falls toward the house needs a drainage answer designed in, not added later. On a sloped Seattle lot that is the majority of them.
Substantially deeper than a patio. Undersized excavation is the single most common reason a driveway fails, and it is invisible once the surface is on.
Crushed rock, compacted layer by layer, with geotextile separation where the subgrade is soft. This is the layer carrying the car.
Pavers bedded, cut and edge-restrained; concrete formed, reinforced, poured and jointed; asphalt laid and rolled to compaction while hot.

Sometimes, and the constraint is usually the kerb rather than the garden. Forming a new vehicle crossing over a footway is a separate matter from paving your own land, and whether it is permitted depends on the street, the frontage width, sight lines, and any street tree or utility furniture in the way. That is the first thing to establish, because a beautifully designed parking pad with no legal way to drive onto it is worth nothing. Once the crossing question is answered, the paving itself on a small Ballard frontage is straightforward work.
It can, and it is one of the few genuine advantages of building here. Much of Ballard and Crown Hill sits on sandier glacial outwash rather than the dense till under most of Seattle, so a driveway base is not sitting on a layer that refuses to take water. Where the ground genuinely drains, the base is doing less drainage work and the whole build-up can occasionally be shallower — which on a hand-dug job is a meaningful saving. It is not universal and pockets of till turn up mid-block, so we test rather than assume.
Almost always because there was never anything restraining them. An unsupported concrete edge with soil or lawn against it has nothing carrying the load when a wheel runs close to the perimeter, so it cracks and progressively breaks away — which is why the failure is at the sides while the middle is often still sound. That is a repairable condition rather than a reason to replace the whole drive: the edges can be cut back and reformed with a proper restraint. We will look at whether the field itself is still in plane before recommending either.
It needs planning, and the constraint is staging rather than the work itself. Excavated spoil has to leave and base material has to arrive on a street where nothing can sit on the kerb for three days, so deliveries are timed to what can be placed and cleared the same day, and any street occupation permission is arranged in advance. On a small Ballard frontage the actual construction is quick; it is the logistics around it that shape the programme. All of it is in the estimate rather than appearing later as a variation.
