What surface handles a steep Issaquah driveway best?
Something with genuine texture, and this is a safety question rather than a preference. A smooth-finish concrete or a large-format smooth paver on a real incline becomes slippery in a wet winter, both underfoot and under tyres on a frosty morning. Textured pavers, a broom or exposed-aggregate concrete finish, or asphalt all give considerably better grip. On the steepest drives it is also worth considering how the surface behaves under a braking vehicle on a cold, wet day, which is not something a showroom sample tells you.
Why does my hillside drive keep developing ruts?
Usually water moving through the base rather than the traffic alone. A driveway base is compacted crushed rock, which on a slope is a permeable layer sitting in the path of subsurface flow coming off the hillside. Over a season or two that flow carries fines out of the base, the layer loses density, and the repeated wheel loading then consolidates it unevenly — which shows as ruts exactly along the lines you drive. Resurfacing without addressing the water buys a couple of years. Intercepting the flow above the drive is the actual fix.
Will the HOA need to approve a driveway here?
Almost certainly. HOA coverage in Issaquah is among the densest in the region — the Highlands, Talus, Klahanie and Providence Point all operate architectural standards — and on a hillside lot the driveway is frequently the single most visible constructed element on the property. Material, colour and extent are all commonly within scope.
