Depth, material and compaction effort, and none of it is visible once the surface is on. A pedestrian surface has to spread a modest, evenly spread load and stay flat. A driveable one has to spread a concentrated fatigue load that arrives on the same two lines every day, which finds any weakness in a base within a couple of winters. That means a deeper excavation, more compacted lifts, frequently a thicker paver unit, and geotextile separation where the subgrade is anything less than firm. The finished surface can look identical, which is exactly why the specification has to be settled before anyone quotes rather than after.

It can, and it is worth raising rather than assuming. A good share of newer Bellevue development sits on engineered fill placed during the original grading, and while that fill is compacted to a specification when it goes in, the surface levels around a house can continue to adjust for some years afterwards, particularly close to foundations and utility trenches. Paving straight over a trench line that has not finished consolidating gives you a dip that follows the trench. We probe and look for the tells before pricing, and where there is a question, the answer is usually a slightly deeper base with geotextile rather than anything dramatic.

A large field reads as a car park when it is one continuous surface in one unit size with nothing interrupting it. Introducing a border course in a different orientation, a soldier line marking where the space changes purpose, a planted island, or a step where the level allows it will do far more than a blend of three shades in the same size. Where a big area genuinely is for parking, the better move is usually to acknowledge that and separate it visibly from the part that is not.

On every open side, yes, and it is the detail that separates a surface that stays tight from one that develops gaps along the perimeter over five years. Pavers are individual units held in place by friction and by whatever restrains the edge. Where a field runs up to a wall or a kerb it is restrained already; where it runs out into a lawn or a bed it is not, and under repeated load the edge units creep outward a few millimetres a year, which opens joints all the way back into the field. Restraint can be a proprietary edging, a concrete haunch or a laid kerb, and which one depends on the load and the look you want at that edge.
