Driveway Paving · West Seattle
West Seattle driveways divide with the peninsula. On the plateau through the Junction, Westwood and Arbor Heights the work is conventional Seattle driveway construction on glacial till — a vehicle-rated base, falls designed to shed water away from the garage, and access that is usually workable. On the bluff side, along Alki and through Fauntleroy and down the Delridge slope, two things change at once: the gradients are steeper, and the ground is slide-sensitive. A driveway is the largest impermeable surface most properties have, so where its runoff goes is a stability question on that side rather than a convenience one.

What we get called about
West Seattle is a plateau with cliffs around it, and which of those two you are on decides the whole job. Plateau lots in the Junction and Westwood are straightforward, level and fast to build on. Bluff lots toward Alki, Fauntleroy and Delridge sit on ground with real landslide history, and a lot of them fall inside Environmentally Critical Area designations where the usual four-foot wall exemption does not apply. The view lots are the ones that need engineering, not just building.
Worth knowing in West Seattle
On a bluff-side drive, design where the runoff goes before you choose the surface. Several hundred square feet of new impermeable paving concentrates water that used to soak in — and delivering that to a slope edge is the fastest way to turn a driveway into a stability problem.
The method
The sequence does not change between neighbourhoods — what changes is the ground it is applied to. Full detail on the driveway paving service page.
A drive that falls toward the house needs a drainage answer designed in, not added later. On a sloped Seattle lot that is the majority of them.
Substantially deeper than a patio. Undersized excavation is the single most common reason a driveway fails, and it is invisible once the surface is on.
Crushed rock, compacted layer by layer, with geotextile separation where the subgrade is soft. This is the layer carrying the car.
Pavers bedded, cut and edge-restrained; concrete formed, reinforced, poured and jointed; asphalt laid and rolled to compaction while hot.
Street apron, garage threshold and the joints against any path or step, which are the points that show wear first and the points a rushed job leaves rough.
What it costs in West Seattle
Plateau driveways price like ordinary Seattle work within $12 to $32 per square foot. Bluff-side projects are priced separately and honestly: parcels inside an Environmentally Critical Area involve a different process, and the runoff design carries more weight, which takes more time both to specify and to build.

Local questions
General questions about this service are on the service page. These are the ones that only come up here.
Yes. A driveway is typically the largest impermeable surface on a residential property, which means rainfall previously soaking in across that area now leaves as concentrated runoff. On level ground that is a drainage detail; on slide-sensitive bluff ground it is a stability question, because saturated soil is the mechanism that moves a slope. A large share of the bluff carries steep slope or landslide-prone designations, so we check the parcel against the city map before quoting and design the runoff destination as part of the project.
Something textured, and on the bluff-side gradients this matters more than appearance. Smooth-finish concrete and large-format smooth pavers on a real incline become genuinely slippery in a wet Seattle winter — underfoot most obviously, and under tyres on a cold morning. Textured pavers, a broom or exposed-aggregate concrete finish, or asphalt all perform considerably better on a slope. It is worth seeing a sample wet rather than choosing from a dry board, because the difference is significant and invisible in a photograph.
Not the paving, which is unaffected by salt-laden wind whether it is concrete, stone or asphalt. What it affects is the metalwork — channel drain grates, fixings, any edge restraint hardware and gate fittings will corrode noticeably faster in an exposed Alki or Fauntleroy position than the same components a mile inland. Since a drainage grate is frequently the one component doing the most important job on a sloped drive, specifying better-grade material there is a small cost with a long payoff.
Usually, and it is one of the more worthwhile improvements on the older Junction and Admiral streets where drives were built for narrower cars. The practical questions are the boundary, any tree at the edge, and whether widening changes where runoff goes. A wider drive is a larger impermeable surface, so the drainage that worked before may not afterwards. On the plateau that is a straightforward calculation; on a bluff-adjacent lot it needs more thought, which is the recurring theme on this side of the peninsula.
