Retaining Walls · Woodinville
Woodinville gives us the largest properties on this list, and on an acreage lot a retaining wall is usually doing something quite different from its suburban equivalent. Rather than winning back a small garden from a bank, it is defining where the maintained garden stops and the wider landscape begins — a terrace that gives the house a level setting, a run that holds a drive across a fall, a series of low walls that make a large sloping area legible. Hollywood Hill has the grade for it. The valley floor below does not, and down there the more common question is whether a raised terrace is really a drainage project. The practical Woodinville constraint is septic: a drainfield is a fixed point no wall can cross.

What we get called about
Woodinville has the largest properties we work on, and acreage changes the nature of the job. The design problem stops being how to fit things into a small space and becomes how to give a large one structure — which usually means deciding what part of it is garden and letting the rest be landscape rather than trying to maintain all of it. Practically, several properties here are on wells and septic, which constrains irrigation design and dictates where you cannot excavate. And the valley floor is a different world from the hills: high water table, flat ground, slow drainage.
Worth knowing in Woodinville
Locate the septic tank and drainfield before you finalise a wall line. You cannot excavate a footing through a drainfield or drive a machine across it, and on a large Woodinville lot the system is frequently in the flattest, most obvious place to build — which is exactly why it needs finding first.
The method
The sequence does not change between neighbourhoods — what changes is the ground it is applied to. Full detail on the retaining walls service page.
We look up whether the property sits in an Environmentally Critical Area and what the grade actually is, because that decides the permit position before it decides anything else.
A level, compacted base trench below finished grade. This is the step that gets rushed on a cheap job and it is the step that determines whether the wall stays straight.
Levelled unit by unit. Every course above copies the first one, so an error here multiplies all the way up.
Perforated pipe at the footing, clean rock backfill placed course by course rather than dumped at the end, and geotextile separating rock from soil so it does not silt up.
Compacted in layers, not filled in one go. Settled backfill is what pulls a wall out of line a year later.
Capping units, any planting above, and the ground reinstated so the wall reads as part of the garden rather than an intervention.
What it costs in Woodinville
Acreage work changes the arithmetic. Access on these properties is excellent, so the per-foot labour is efficient and the same wall costs less to build than in the city — but Woodinville projects tend to need considerably more linear footage, so the total is higher. Where a wall crosses or approaches a septic system the design has to work around it, and that constraint is worth pricing honestly rather than discovering during excavation.

Local questions
General questions about this service are on the service page. These are the ones that only come up here.
Near, yes; over or through, no. A drainfield needs the soil above and around it undisturbed and uncompacted to function, so you cannot excavate a footing through it, run heavy plant across it, or bury it under fill. On a large Woodinville property the drainfield is frequently sited in the flattest, most accessible part of the lot, which is exactly where a wall or terrace is most tempting. The first step is locating the system properly — records, or a survey where records are poor — and designing the wall line around it. Discovering it during excavation is an expensive afternoon.
Usually longer and lower than a suburban one, and built to read as part of the landscape rather than as an intervention. On a large lot a single tall wall looks like infrastructure and draws the eye to itself; a series of low runs stepping across a fall, with planting between them, gives the ground structure without dominating it. Natural stone and larger-format block hold their own at that scale better than the smaller units that suit a city garden. The practical benefit is the same as everywhere: shorter walls avoid the thresholds that trigger additional requirements.
Not directly, but it is worth knowing where the wellhead and its protective radius are before excavating anything substantial nearby. Several Woodinville properties, particularly toward Cottage Lake, Bear Creek and the county pockets, run on private wells, and the ground around a wellhead has protection requirements attached to it. In practice a garden retaining wall well away from the head is not an issue. What matters is establishing the location at the design stage, along with the septic system, rather than working it out with a machine already on site.
By sizing it for the whole catchment, which on an acreage property is considerably larger than the wall implies. A run at the foot of a several-acre slope is intercepting the surface and shallow subsurface water from all of it through the wet months, so the standard detail — perforated pipe at the footing, free-draining rock, geotextile — needs a discharge route with real capacity rather than a token outlet. On these lots the discharge is frequently the design constraint, and establishing where it can legitimately go comes before deciding where the wall goes.
