Hardscaping · Bothell
Bothell runs along two valley floors — the Sammamish River and North Creek — with substantial upland either side at Norway Hill to the west and the Canyon Park side to the east. The valley ground is alluvial with a high water table; the upland is glacial till. Bothell also straddles a county line, which is a genuine practical point rather than trivia: permit thresholds and critical-area rules are not identical on both sides, so the answer to "do I need a permit for this wall" depends on which side of the line the parcel sits as well as how tall the wall is. We establish that before quoting rather than assuming.

What we get called about
Bothell is a valley city with uplands either side, and which of the two you are on decides the work. Valley-floor properties along the Sammamish River and North Creek sit on alluvial ground with a high water table, so drainage is constrained by available fall and discharge rather than by design preference. Up on Norway Hill and the Canyon Park plateau you are on ordinary till with real grade, and the work is walls, terracing and design. Bothell also straddles a county line, so the jurisdiction — and the rules — depend on the address.
Worth knowing in Bothell
Confirm which jurisdiction the parcel falls under before assuming a permit position. Bothell straddles a county line and the thresholds are not identical on both sides — which is a cheap question at the quoting stage and an expensive one later.
The method
The sequence does not change between neighbourhoods — what changes is the ground it is applied to. Full detail on the hardscaping service page.
Before anything is priced. Where the water arrives, where it currently goes, and where it will go once a few hundred square feet of ground stops absorbing it. On a sloping lot this changes the design, not just the drainage line.
Walls before paving, drainage before both, and anything needing machine access before the route in is closed off. A correct sequence is most of what keeps a multi-element job from costing twice.
Wall height, Environmentally Critical Area, impervious surface limits. Three elements each individually exempt can still cross a threshold together, and finding that out mid-build is the expensive version.
Excavation to the depth the use requires, compaction in lifts, and the drainage placed as the structure goes up rather than added at the end. None of this is visible when the job is done, which is why it is where a cheap quote saves money.
Paving, wall faces, caps, stone. The part everyone is paying attention to, and the fastest part of the job when the three steps above were done properly.
Edges, jointing, the soft landscaping back in, and the levels checked against where the water is meant to go. We walk the finished fall lines with you rather than asserting them.
What it costs in Bothell
Bothell paving runs $20 to $50 per square foot with whole-garden schemes typically $30,000 to $110,000. Valley-floor jobs carry more drainage and upland jobs more wall, and the split is close to even across the work we do here.

Local questions
General questions about this service are on the service page. These are the ones that only come up here.
It can. Bothell straddles a county boundary, and permit thresholds and critical-area rules are not identical on both sides of it. For a wall near the usual four-foot threshold, or for work on sloping or sensitive ground, which side the parcel sits on can change the answer. It is a straightforward question to resolve at the quoting stage and an awkward one to resolve mid-build.
That drainage needs a real discharge rather than somewhere to soak. Where groundwater sits close to the surface, dry wells and soakaways have limited capacity, and a base dug deep into saturated ground stays wet. The usual answer is a drain line to a definite outfall plus a base built up rather than down. Very workable, but it has to be designed for.
Yes. Norway Hill and the Canyon Park side carry glacial till and behave like hillside ground — terracing, retaining walls, drainage behind them, the four-foot threshold question. The valley floors are alluvial with the water table issue above. Two Bothell lots a mile apart can genuinely need different approaches, which is why we look at ground rather than pricing from an address.
Paving at $20 to $50 per square foot and walls at $5 to $45 per square foot of face, with whole-garden schemes usually $30,000 to $110,000. Bothell sits mid-range for this market — lots are generally larger than Seattle and smaller than Sammamish or Woodinville, and the budgets follow.
